Medical Sector

The information technology sector has faced some very serious challenges with regards to the medical sector and specifically, about the issue of the patient’s medical records. It has been long decided that the medical records of a patient are his/her property. But from that recognition, until the free access to these records anywhere, and anytime, the way is long. There are a few elements that are crucial while we discuss the issue of the patient medical record:
1. The data sensitivity – the medical records of a patient are very sensitive, and an access of unauthorized people to that data can be harmful. If we are talking about the procession of the medical records by the patients, we have to guarantee that no-one else would have the ability to access that data, and that the data would be strongly encrypted in case of data loss.
2.  The need to access the data anywhere – we would like to have the ability to carry our medical records anywhere, and to be able to use them in a transparent way while we visit other medical institute, also in other locations. The medical records have to be stored on a portable platform that would enable us an immediate access from any location.
3. Adding ad-hoc data – we would like to have the possibility to add other medical records and medical events that happen while we are away from the network of our medical institute or insurance. If for example, we are on a trip abroad, we would like to have the infrastructure that would enable the physician we would visit there, to add his medical record and examination to the same platform we use, and that this medical record would eventually be an integral part of our medical history.
4. Emergency information – we would like to be in a position that the most urgent medical information (like blood type, sensitivity to certain substances etc.) would be available to the physician that would treat us in an urgent matter. This emergency information, unlike our medical record and history, would be available to anyone who needs it in an emergency case.

These minimal requirements while we talk about the medical records of a patients are met with the MedCard of n-Trance Security. The cards has the following characteristics:

1. It has a public partition where all the emergency data is available immediately without the need to authenticate.
2. It has a private partition which is accessible only after a positive fingerprint authentication of the user.
3. The private partition that contains the medical records and history is fully encrypted with a military strength 256-bit AES encryption, and is located in a hidden partition of the device.
4. The hidden partition with the medical records contains two main segments
4.1 A read only partition – this partition is synchronized with the medical record server of the medical institute where the patient belongs too. Every time when the user connects his secured MedCard to an Internet-connected PC, the device looks for changes on the server side, and download an XML file with the latest changes. The downloaded changes can not be modified on the MedCard side.
4.2 A read and write partition – in this pane, any physician which is not directly connected to the patient medical institute, can write his observation and findings. This input will be later assessed by the patient’s doctor, and will be edited and be part of the medical history records.
